His unique ability to cross over between styles like deep house, techno and hard-hitting electro-funk has made Aaron-Carl one of the most interesting Detroit Electronic Music artists. Impossible to pigeonhole, his discography features a variety of styles — from soulful house cuts like “Crucified,” “Sky” and the Billboard-charting “My House,” to ghettotech anthems like “Down,” “No No” and “21 Positions.” Aaron-Carl has released on various labels throughout the world; including Rebirth, Metroplex, Subject Detroit, Ovum, Universal France and his own imprint, Wallshaker Music. He has remixed some of Detroit’s biggest techno artists, like Underground Resistance, Scan 7, DJ Bone, Aux 88 & Kelli Hand. In addition, he has remixed various house, R&B and other mainstream artists, including Dajae, GusGus, Manu Dibango, N’Dambi (with Keite Young) and Kindred the Family Soul; as well as writing and producing for legendary house artists, such as CeCe Peniston and Michelle Weeks. Starting in 1996, armed with little more than a keyboard and a four-track cassette recorder, his demo landed into the hands of “Mad” Mike Banks of Underground Resistance. Shortly after, Aaron-Carl was signed to the UR sub-label, Soul City. His first two records — “Wash It” (featuring “Down”) and “Crucified” were released simultaneously; instantly earning him a local and international following. Mentored by Mike Banks, Aaron describes the experience as similar to boot camp. “It wasn’t enough for me to write great songs,” he says. “Mike challenged me to make great RECORDS.” Ron Murphy (NSC/Sound Enterprises, Detroit) taught him how to master his songs; helping Aaron to establish his trademark “Wallshaker” beats.In 1998, Aaron-Carl launched his own label, Wallshaker Music. One of his first self-released singles, “My House,” got licensed by Josh Wink’s label, Ovum Recordings, and became Aaron’s first Billboard Top 40 Dance/Club hit. Aaron-Carl’s music has been showcased in various feature films — most notably Maestro, a house music documentary by Josell Ramos, which featured original tracks “Sky” and “Oasis.” He also appears in The Godfather Chronicles — The Ghetto Tech Sound of Detroit. His remix of rapper Johnny Dangerous’ “Topsy Turvy” (in which he makes a cameo appearance) is featured in Pick Up the Mic, a documentary by Alex Hinton. Hong Kong born and raised in Canada, Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit has been steadily making his mark in underground electronic music circles since his first release in 2003. Stuart grew up listening to Toronto’s college radio stations and attended after hours parties playing underground house music. He later worked at Cosmos Records store which dealt vintage Jazz, Soul, Funk, Latin, Brazilian, Disco, House & Hip Hop to crate diggers both local and from abroad. Reflecting his diverse interest in music, Stuart's house & techno productions can swing from lush and soulful to crunchy and jacking . He has released and remixed music on respected labels such as Nonplus+, Dolly, Philpot, Mathematics, Mule Electronic, Versatile, Ostgut Ton, Créme Organization & New Kanada. The end of 2012 saw the the release of Basic Soul Unit’s first album “Motional Response” on Chicago’s Still Music to great critical acclaim. Cassy recently included 2 of Stuart’s tracks on her Fabric 71 mix CD for Fabric London. 2013 also marks the inaugural ep release of his own label Lab.our which he started with long time friend Jason Ulrich. As with his productions, Stuart's strength as a DJ is his versatility. Depending on the night and the crowd, he can throw down melodic techno, heavy jacking and industrial sounds, deep house, disco, and often a combination of these. Basic Soul Unit has also been performing live over the last 2 years. Stuart’s live set expresses the rawness and honesty of his productions. Expect soulful melodies and squelching acid basslines intertwining with rough hewn beats & jacking rhythms.
