Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, an adopted Montrealer who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000 for labels such as Cynosure, Intr_version, Revolver, and Scape. Deadbeat has performed at some of the world's most respected festivals, including Barcelona's Sonar, Berlin's Transmediale, and Montreal's own Mutek. From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked, assuming various roles, for the Montreal based company Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of the Tassman Software Synthesizer. Having now moved on to pursue his own musical efforts full time, the experience has left him with a passion for the development of new creative interfaces, and a strong grasp of some the most cutting edge technology in the industry. Whether crafting quirky, not-quite-dancefloor techno, or rumbling digital dub,Scott continually strives to create music that honors the past beyond empty tribute or cultural appropriation, by infusing the digital tools of the present with a little of the magic known as human imperfection. Hindered only by the occasional buffer underrun or synapse misfiring, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros.

Any historian who takes it upon themselves to pen the tale of Canadian electronic in the years to come will most certainly find the name Mike Shannon figures early and often in it’s telling. From his humble beginnings in the sleepy suburban town of Kitchener Ontario, the last 15 years have seen him become an internationally lauded producer with albums on 3 of the industry’s most respected labels (Plus 8, Force Inc, ~Scape), as well as a steady stream of consistently charted singles and remixes. A true “DJ’s DJ”, he has won legions of fans and the respect of his peers alike for his deep crates and lightning fast mixing skills. And while some may suggest he has gravitated towards smoother, deeper selections as the years go by, those in the know will tell you he has few equals when it comes to whipping dance floors into a relentless techno frenzy should you catch him on a night with that mischievous twinkle in his eye. Those fortunate enough to catch one of Mike’s rare live performances are encouraged to do so with an open mind, as it is in this context that the breadth of his creativity truly shines. From the shuffling house and techno of his solo performances to the narcotic jazz of his new Blue Fields project alongside singer Fadila and guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto, his is a musical vision which easily wriggles free of the usual genre signifiers and pays grand dividends to those with the good sense to get nice and close to the speakers; the devil is most certainly in the details as the old saying goes. Yet beyond all of this, perhaps his greatest achievement has been his unfailing support of the music and people he loves. As head A&R and damn near everything else of Cynosure and formerly Revolver Canada Recordings (alongside Jeff Milligan) for over 10 years, Mike has shown an uncanny ability to select and release tracks which have become go-to fixtures in the sets of the industry’s best DJs, as well as introducing the world to the work of some of his nearest and dearest before anyone knew their names (Akufen, Deadbeat, Ernesto Ferrerya). Far from pursuing the next one hit wonder or sound of the season, his steadfast curatorial vision and passion for the music have earned him the trust of discerning music connoisseurs the world over. Decades in, the Vancouver native still gets the jitters before a performance, which speaks a lot to his ethos. For a guy for whom a record bag is so much more than the sum of its parts, every gig is a big deal. And if you've ever had the chance to catch him in action—be it DJing or jumping between his MPC and a sole turntable—, you'd agree. Low-key and loved by many, the rambling capitán of Maybe Tomorrow possesses a steadfast commitment to keeping it groovy above all. 'And weird!' A normally elusive creature, The Mole can be found most at home behind a DJ booth during the wee smoky hours in the midst of long, drawn-out sets. The more time for injecting a bit of Marvin Gaye here, some Mercedes Sosa there, the better. Known for his love of sonic collage and musical noodling, he boasts a long and colourful list of releases—for labels like Perlon, Ostgut Ton, Slices of Life, Haunt, Musique Risquée, New Kanada, Internasjonal and longtime home Wagon Repair. A relentless digger with an utter disregard for the structural capabilities of his living room floor, Colin is on a constant one-man mission to keep the record store industry afloat. This means, in his case, approaching music with the kind of open-mindedness and humility necessary for not only acquiring, but learning. Which might be what makes him an ideal bandmate to his friends in Modern Deep Left Quartet and Units & Measurements. 'That—or the fart jokes.' It's the low profile, the constant smile and a genuine love for music that make The Mole, an artist with a career spanning over 20 years, an easy one to recognise at a party. He's the guy with an ear-to-ear grin on his face, wondering why in the world he's getting paid for having so much fun.
