He was there when Goldie declared it drum & bass but to this day he still prefers the term jungle. He chats regularly with James Lavelle, wondering what would've become if his remixes of Attica Blues had led to a more affirmed relationship with the agenda setting Mo Wax. His major label link with Virgin is the blueprint of how things once were; endless time and budget-free worries led to 'Modus Operandi'. A conceptual experiment of time and emotive atmospherics, it pushed the drum & bass template to the edge. Previously misinterpreted as a lone paranoid soldier, a conspiracy theorist and a man from Ipswich, Rupert Photek Parkes is none of the above. Each tale you'll be regaled with elsewhere online is based on a spec of truth that's exploded beyond proportion. May the real Photek please stand up... 2011 will see him drop a series of sounds that reflect the truest perception of him once and for all. Driven by his years of studio discipline; sharpened by an acute awareness that he'll be received by the heads that know him well and ears that don't know him at all, Photek's new sound carries all the barbed motifs and icy atmospherics you'll know from seminal cuts such as 'Seven Samurai' and 'Hidden Camera' all tied up tight with his own take on today's contemporary genre-breaking melting pot. Ardent displays of his eclectic method were there from the very beginning. The seeds had been sewn back in the dancefloor's most formative days, attending early raves, pretty much in his school uniform, and hearing DJs like Jumping Jack Frost fire their way through everything from Derrick May to Phil Collins. These influences are clear from his first EP on Metalheadz with the drum & bass meets downtempo 'Into The 90s'... 'Yendi', the flipside to the 'Modus Operandi' 12', was a prototype for dubstep while 'Mine To Give', a sassy slab of sexed up house coated in Robert Owens' iconic soul, set the foundations for the genreless battlefields well trodden by the likes of Commix and Mount Kimbie. A list of his big screen scores should follow, but it won't. Photek carelessly yarns his years in LA as 'doing this and that', but it wasn't. Hived in the western world's most creative hub, his time since 2007's 'Form & Function Volume 2' has been a creative whirlwind. Collaborations with Nine Inch Nails and troubled troubadour Ray LaMontagne; sell out TekDUZ shows with 12th Planet and DJ Craze; the evening commute down Sunset Boulevard with Fab & Groove on Sirius reminding him of the UK bass culture he helped develop... Photek stands undeniably on the edge of undiluted inspiration. Destination tomorrow: Photek's decorated past and diligent work ethic leads us here. The new music you've heard from Photek in 2011 is yet another chapter in a life spent overdosing on sonic nuances and boundary testing. In the past 12 months his new material has been remixed by the brightest young stars of dance music - Boddika, Falty DL, Addison Groove and Breach to name a few. In turn, Photek has remixed for the likes of Moby, Jess Mills, Distance, Ray Lamontagne and was part of Daft Punk's Tron Remixed package - for which he has been nominated for a Grammy. His newly re-launched label, Photek Productions, has this year released the 'Avalanche EP' which garnered international support from tastemakers such as Benji B, Gilles Peterson, Skream, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and more, and the 'Aviator EP'. The single 'Closer' was also released on Pinch's pioneering Tectonic Recordings in June. 2012 has seen Photek release a DJ Kicks mix compilation on K7 Records and his long awaited new artist album, KU:PALM.

The artist known as Pinch is a pioneer of dubstep, the sound that sparked one of the biggest waves of musical creativity ever seen in the UK. Subloaded, which he began in his adopted hometown of Bristol back in 2004, was the first dedicated dubstep and grime night outside of FWD\u003e\u003e in London, and to this day the impact of the party still ripples through Bristol's bass community. Techno's endless permutations are as much an inspiration as dub in Pinch's music. His DJ sets and productions take the term 'dub techno' not as a concrete blueprint laid down by Basic Channel in the 1990s, but as a creative springboard to explore and combine two of the most versatile music styles ever conceived. The bass and dynamics of dub are interwoven with the tense soundscapes and atmospheres of techno. This is why you might find Pinch scorching the dance floor at a techno club one week, before rolling out a set of the heaviest dub, dubstep and dancehall the next. The strength and flexibility of Pinch's sound has naturally created a global demand for his DJ sets. Beyond regularly playing in the UK and Europe, he's toured in over 40 countries, which has included the USA, Canada, Japan, China, Australasia, South East Asia, Russia and Mexico. This ongoing activity has also been reflected in media and radio interest. Pinch has recorded mixes for BBC R1, 1Xtra, Kiss FM, Resident Advisor, FACT and Red Bull (with whom he's worked on various projects), while his 2012 session for the Fabriclive series remains a landmark in his career. The vehicle for so much of Pinch's work down the years has been Tectonic. Since founding the label in 2005, he's released music from trailblazers like Loefah, Skream, Scientist, 2562, Photek, Digital Mystikz, Distance, Flying Lotus, Joker, Addison Groove and Peverelist, and he continues to cultivate fresh talent who have an eye on club music's future. Seminal Pinch releases like the 2007 album Underwater Dancehall and tracks such as 'Midnight Oil,' 'Blow Out The Candle' and 'The Boxer' have all appeared on Tectonic. Away from home, his releases and remixes have featured on leading labels like Planet Mu, Soul Jazz, Punch Drunk, Deep Medi, Swamp 81, Ninja Tune, Warp, Wichita, Wax and On-U Sound, collaborations that have yielded a few bass music classics—'Qawwali,' 'Punisher,' 'Croydon House,' 'Swish.' This openness to collaboration has been one of Pinch's defining artistic characteristics. He's worked with a broad swathe of club music producers down the years, which more recently has included a partnership with Mumdance that's given us anthems like 'Turbo Mitzi,' 'Strobe Light' and 'Big Slug,' which featured Riko Dan. Pinch's collaborative work in the album format has also lived long in the memory. In 2011, he linked with the inimitable Shackleton to write an album for Honest Jons, while his ongoing work with the legendary Adrian Sherwood has so far produced two albums, 2015's Late Night Endless and 2017's Man Vs Sofa. The pair toured the globe together playing live dub sets as Pinch & Sherwood. Moving into 2019, and with a deadly 12-inch for Berceuse Heroique soon to drop, Pinch has lined up a brand new series of collaborations that will be tearing through soundsystems in the near future. A follow-up to 2007's Underwater Dancehall album is also in the works, a project that will build upon the longstanding foundations laid down by one of UK club music's true originals.
