Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, an adopted Montrealer who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000 for labels such as Cynosure, Intr_version, Revolver, and Scape. Deadbeat has performed at some of the world's most respected festivals, including Barcelona's Sonar, Berlin's Transmediale, and Montreal's own Mutek. From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked, assuming various roles, for the Montreal based company Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of the Tassman Software Synthesizer. Having now moved on to pursue his own musical efforts full time, the experience has left him with a passion for the development of new creative interfaces, and a strong grasp of some the most cutting edge technology in the industry. Whether crafting quirky, not-quite-dancefloor techno, or rumbling digital dub,Scott continually strives to create music that honors the past beyond empty tribute or cultural appropriation, by infusing the digital tools of the present with a little of the magic known as human imperfection. Hindered only by the occasional buffer underrun or synapse misfiring, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros.

Konstantinos Soublis’ music was born in urban Greece and really found its path during the mid 90s, in a city that existed in a state of ‘flux’ like no other in the 20th century. Berlin’s social, historical and political factors all came to bear both consciously and unconsciously on the musicians experimenting in the city around the turn of the millennium and the freedom in the city’s creative spirit was very much a reflection of these wider factors. This, along with the naivety and liberalism of the time, mixed with punk-like rebellion against form gave birth to many of the strains of techno and electronic music that now dominate the sound of clubs the world over. Fluxion was swept along in this wave of creating for creativity’s sake during this special time, with an organic, naturally fluid and playful attitude towards pushing artistic boundaries. With 8 Fluxion albums and numerous ep’s, his work sprawls across 2 decades. Fluxion was at the start of the Dub Techno movement that is now considered a gender with thousands of releases. Two decades of constantly releasing and blending sounds without resting on his laurels of now considered classic releases such as Vibrant Forms I and II but always inducing his sound with new ideas, and embracing the free form improvisational approach which enables an artist to use his studio as an instrument not a tool. He has collaborated with various well respected labels, such as Chain Reaction and Echocord as well as his own imprint Vibrant Music which has recently been re-launched (2017) for Fluxion and associated releases. He has recently collaborated on a new project titled Transformations with fellow Dub Techno sound artist Deepchord (Rod Modell). While much of the scene Soublis and his contemporaries spawned have become aggressive and direct, Fluxion’s work takes the long view, “allowing sound to breath”, interact and meld together in new and unexpected ways. He plays with the mind’s conventional expectations in pieces of music, with no one loop repeating itself. Motifs may come and go, appearing unexpectedly in new and wonderful forms but with each experience of his music he wants the listener to perceive it in a different way. The artist himself is often likes to taken into the realm of an audience, as his own creations are layered up and find an unintentional life of their own. In his live performances he is allowing room to himself for free improvisation of the pieces, resulting for those incidental accidents or “mistakes” as he puts it, to be fed back into the performance, probing again at the vibrancy of the room when the artist decides to take control of the musical flow again. Through his current output and performances he aims to show that electronic music can be a constantly evolving collage of moods and textures and give this structure only through his over 20 years of experience in electronic composition. Fluxion today aims to embracing spontaneity, give space for non perfection and let go of control.

Ever since the early 2000’s, both producers have been channeling their music through this now iconic moniker – an ever-growing experimental ground in the midsts of electronic music’s history. In a nutshell, their productions pay tribute to the provenance of a dance floor based on deepness, dub and melancholy. The result? Tracks nobody on this planet can ignore, let alone want to. To make this happen, Rakete and Hunger founded a record label of the same name in 2007. Since then, they keep busy 24/7 – as producers, A&R and remixers. A labour of love, focussing on the sometimes heavily pumping, sometimes gently pulsing heritage of the Golden Era of a concept of deepness both fuzzy and cloudy. There – and there only – real feelings are to be found, waiting to be harvested and re-contextualised. What originally started as an outlet for their own music, quickly became a platform for friends and acquaintances as well. A safe space for those who not only feel the same way musically as Rakete and Hunger, but also appreciate the holism of their artistic approach, be it artwork, formats or communication. This approach is centered around the concept of friendship – and visualized by an ever so slightly grinning robot. This guy is both FDF’s CI and an allegory. Can technology become somewhat human? The answer is yes. And it does not require a sophisticated AI – some with heart and mind wired circuits will do the trick just fine. Just as it was back then, when the musical cosmos for which FREUND DER FAMILIE today rose up out of the primordial soup of warehouse parties, bright drinks and naive uncompromisingness. Roots last the longest. FREUND DER FAMILIE produces and publishes for those who don’t want to forget history and at the same time have no fear of the future. A robot watches over them – forever. text by thaddeus herrmann

marko fürstenberg was born in 1976 in thuringia, germany. influenced by the 80s music such as depeche mode, a-ha and new order he was attracted to electronic music from its beginning. very early marko made his first steps in recording his own tapes as “dolby”. in the beginning of 1995 he started dj-ing at several parties in thuringia and already then showing a techno-orientation originated from labels like x-trax, force inc., klang and later basic channel. a few years later he started creating his first own electronic sounds with a pc and thus he invested constantly in technical equipment. in 2000 his first project “vertikal 23” was established, in cooperation with local musicians. the outcome was a mixture between downbeat & trip hop but later on marko developed his own deep sound. providing his music on the internet, marko got in touch with the “thinner” netlabel, which published his first release under “dolby” alias in 2002. further releases followed also on other netlabels such as realaudio, stadtgruen and instabil, as well as remixes for digitalverein, rktic, lod and sarah goldfarb. the success story began: between 2003 and 2005 marko performed at some international festivals and clubs, e.g. in canada, greece, sweden, poland, suisse, austria, etc. after publishing quite a number of netreleases, his first vinyl track on “thinner allstars pt.1” (2003) was published under the pseudonym “surphase”. very soon after that marko decided to use his real name marko fürstenberg for his future work. after moving to leipzig in 2006, marko approached a peak level in productivity, releasing a number of songs in rapid succession with labels like a.r.t.less, tfe and rotary-cocktail. marko’s success within the constantly changing techno scene didn’t come as a surprise: together with diverse dj partners as well as solo artist marko fürstenberg is now performing regularly in clubs & parties all over europe. his live sets combine classic dub-techno elements with current techno trends, which is much valued by his audience. with this kind of electronic music marko is considerably involved in the development of dub- and deep-techno.

Robert Henke, born in 1969 in Munich. I was always fascinated by technology, wanted to become an enigneer. Some day I discovered Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre and I could not stop listen to it again and again. I did stupid jobs after school and finally had enough money to buy a Roland Juno-6. Now I was able to create strange electronic sound collages and I played in a bad gothic band. In 1990 I moved to Berlin.City of techno and of the Elektronische Studio der Technischen Universität. Computer music during daytime. Dancing at night. I started making electronic music with Gerhard Behles* and began to study sound engineering at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen in Potsdam Babelsberg, where I made sound installations and film soundtracks. One of my installations lead to my first CD Piercing Music. One of the tracks of Gerhard and me was released on Chain Reaction and we named the project m o n o l a k e Later I started the imbalance computer music label while Gerhard founded the software company Ableton to create music software and I joined the team. Monolake became a Robert Henke solo project with occasional support by friends, like Torsten 'T++' Pröfrock who added a new note to the sonic world of monolake on the album polygon_cities in 2004. My music is about the exploration of sound, rhythm and structure, about the interaction between a sonic event and the space in which it happens. During the years monolake got more focused on music for the dancefloor while I release drones and soundscapes under my real name.

Sickinger has been releasing music under various names, such as Spectral Network, Satori Corporations and Lovely Mornings, and founded the labels Combat Zone (1989-1993), Influx (1993-1996) and Halcyon Recordings (1997-1999). Later on he founded the labels Transistor Rhythm and Octal, who have released artists such as 90s techno hit The Grid, the psychedelic techno-shaman Terrence McKenna and the dub techno legend Rod Modell from the Deep Chord-fame. Jonas Thor Gudmundsson, better known as Ruxpin first started producing music at the age of 14. His first release Mission EP was released on Uni:Form Recordings 1999 and the same year his first LP entitled Radio was released on the same label. Through his debut album he got in touch with the highly acclaimed label Elektrolux where he released his next two LPs (Midnight Drive & Avalon), alongside with one LP on their sublabel Mikrolux. In late 2006 he released his fifth full length album Elysium on Mikrolux. In 2010 he released his sixth album on n5MD, Where Do We Float From Here? Following that release came a free online release I Wonder if This is the Place, which featured remixes by artists such as Leon Somov, Galaktlan, Biogen, Ijo and Worm is Green alongside additional tracks by Ruxpin himself. In his collaboration project with Fannar Ásgrímsson from Plastik Joy came to life with the release of their debut album Love in Times of Repetition in 2012 under the pseudonym Asonat. In 2013 the seventh release of Ruxpin will see the day of light on n5MD. The debut release of their collaboration was the Automatik EP on the Transistor Rhythm output in 2004. Couple of years later they joined their friend Deep Chord for a shared 12“ release, which today is a quite a valuable gem for dub techno lovers. The three of them joined hands together later that year to create a 3x12“ release undir the pseudonym Spectral Network. The release was quite limited (111 copies) and was considered one of the most interesting 12“ releases that year by many critics. After the release of the Spectral Network eps the duo went for hiatus as other projects took over, also as opportunity for musical collaborations became harder as the Atlantic Ocean divides them. In 2011 the duo was asked by the french independent label Entropy Records to remix Mr. Cloudy and work on a full-length release, which later became 'Meeting of the Waves' LP. There was an opportunity to explore the collaboration further and the sparkle came back. Another remix followed for G.R.I.T. which was hailed by dubtechnoblog.com as the best remix of the year 2012. In more recent years, Octal Industries has been working on numerous collaborations with artists such as OHM - and fruits of their work has been released on labels such as Thule Records, Rawax, Taped Artifact and Luck of Access.

Despite his young age, Weisemann has been DJing since 1997. His musical influences ranges from Classic, Soundtracks, Soul and Jazz, Deep House and Dub to his beloved Detroit Techno and US House. As a producer, his music draws deeply on the legacy of Chicago and Detroit, yet somehow manages to end up sounding as fresh as a daisy - records such as 'Vibe' and 'Slices' are house music that is half atmosphere and half beats, and not afraid to take its sweet time to lull the floor with their charms. A self-taught musician who plays piano, acoustic guitar and percussion, Weisemann also composes jazz and soundtracks - traditions which also inform his house records no doubt, many of which you can find on Meanwhile, House Café Music, Apple Pips, Kann, a.r.t.less, Wandering, Liebe*Detail, Real Soon, Styrax Leaves, Essays, Freund Der Familie, Fauxpas Musik, Echocord, Delsin, Telrae, Just Another Beat and especially Mojuba, where Weisemann's music slots together with friends Nick Solé and Oracy to form a distinct, and highly collectible, label sound. Several pseudonyms are in circulation.

Hello, My name is Alexandre Lehmann and Zzzzra is the name of my main music project. I produce electronic music since late 80’s. At that time I was working in my adolescent bedroom, using a brand new Roland D-20, creating stupid love songs without lyrics ; I then moved to the living-room when I finally grew up and sold all my gears - except for my mighty Nord Modular - to focus on computer. That’s about the only big difference in my producing modus operandi since then. Well, except that now I’m a drug addict but that’s another story. I like to wear slippers when I’m producing music. But sometimes it’s a bit warm out there so I have to go barefoot. I have the feeling that I’m more creative when I have a beard. When I shave, everything goes wrong… I often drink bottles of soda (with a lot of sugar in it) just above my keyboard. This occasionally means big troubles ! Sometimes I have to work on a track for 10 hours straight with no pause (because I always forget to have a break) and then I get bed sores on my ass.
