Andrés: From Slum Village to La Vida

Humberto Hernández first became known as DJ Dez, the live DJ for Slum Village. He worked at Detroit's Buy Rite Records and spent time in the studio with J Dilla. Those years placed him close to hip hop production before he became widely known for house music as Andrés.

Mahogani Music released the first three Andrés albums. Hernández then founded La Vida with "New For U" in 2012. Mahogani later released "Andrés IV" in 2019 and "Andrés V" in 2023. His catalogue brings Detroit house together with soul, Latin percussion, and hip hop sampling.

Moodymann

Moodymann, also known as Kenny Dixon Jr., knew Hernández through Buy Rite Records. Dixon later released the first three Andrés albums through Mahogani Music. Our guide to Moodymann and the Detroit house spectrum covers the wider Mahogani circle.

Dixon founded KDJ Records in 1994 and later started Mahogani Music. His albums have also appeared on Planet E and Peacefrog. His Detroit house uses soul records and spoken voices, with edits that leave parts of the source recording exposed.

J Dilla

J Dilla was a Detroit hip hop producer and a member of Slum Village. Hernández worked as the group's live DJ and spent time with Dilla in the studio. Dilla's production centred on samples and his own approach to drum timing.

Slum Village released music through Barak and GoodVibe before moving to major labels. Dilla's solo work appeared through BBE and Stones Throw, while his Pay Jay company now manages his catalogue and music rights. He produced extensively for Slum Village and built a wider studio career with singers and rappers including Common and Erykah Badu.

Theo Parrish

Theo Parrish grew up in Chicago, studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, then moved to Detroit in 1994. He founded Sound Signature in 1997 and built the label around his own releases and music by other artists.

Peacefrog released his first album, while most of his catalogue has appeared through Sound Signature. He has also released through KDJ and other Detroit labels. His long Detroit house recordings use samples from soul and jazz records.

Rick Wade

Rick Wade has released Detroit house since the 1990s.

He started Harmonie Park in 1994 and used it for his own records as well as music by other Detroit producers. Wade has also released through Moods & Grooves and Track Mode. Rush Hour later issued his music too. He became known for deep house built from short funk and soul samples.

Marcellus Pittman

Marcellus Pittman is part of 3 Chairs with Moodymann, Theo Parrish, and Rick Wilhite. His solo records have appeared on Sound Signature and his own Unirhythm label.

Pittman first reached a wider audience through records made with Theo Parrish for Sound Signature. He later released solo music through FXHE and Mahogani Music before setting up Unirhythm. His stripped back Detroit house uses uneven rhythms and leaves large gaps in the arrangement.

Motor City Drum Ensemble

Motor City Drum Ensemble is Danilo Plessow from Stuttgart. The name refers both to Stuttgart's car industry and to the Detroit techno culture Plessow encountered at local Motor City parties.

Plessow first released broken beat as part of Inverse Cinematics. His early Motor City Drum Ensemble records appeared through Four Roses and Compost before he founded MCDE for his own releases. His sample based house draws from funk and soul records. His DJ work has also led to mix releases for DJ-Kicks and fabric.

Nebraska

Ali Gibbs records as Nebraska and has released music through Rush Hour and Delusions of Grandeur. His work moves between house and broken beat.

Gibbs grew up in a family of record collectors and began looking for old breakbeats as a teenager. He has also released through Heist and Mister Saturday Night. Gibbs later started Friends & Relations for his own music. As Nebraska, he uses chopped samples across house rhythms and broken drums.

Sound Stream

Frank Timm records as Sound Stream.

Timm began releasing more direct techno as Soundhack in the late 1990s. He also worked with Errorsmith as Smith N Hack. Most Sound Stream records appeared through his own Sound Stream label, while the Soundhack name had its own numbered series. Timm cuts very small parts from disco records and rebuilds them as direct house tracks.
