Carlos Nilmmns Mix (Planet E)

France-residing, Scottish expat, Carlos Nilmmns has released and featured on over 50+ vinyl releases, 6 albums and many remixes with notable releases including “Subculture”, “Red”, “Distant Galaxy” (As Solab) and “Get By Me” which featured Detroit artists Davina Bussey (Underground Resistance) Niko Marks (Planet-E, Underground Resistance) and Andrés (KDJ, Mahogani Music).

Turns out he’s also a pretty fine DJ, so we hit him up for a mix and a quick chat.

What’s been happening in your world recently?

So far this year its been a busy one. In January I released a record on Deetron’s label Character with Ripperton, Niko Marks and Keter Darker.

I also just released a new mini album record on Ornaments. Its crazy because these new records have attracted a wider audience the usual. The label Ornaments have been ramping up my releases too. They just released the digital versions of my popular “Subculture” and “Cupid & Psyche” mini albums due to a lot of people requesting repress/digital releases. Ornaments actually are planning another record with a well known DJ/artist from Detroit on the remix duties.

I’ve completed a new club track album too I’ve only sent it off to one label at the moment so its early days. It will be my second full length Carlos Nilmmns album since “Lune Eclaire” from 2012.

Other side projects include collaborations with Niko Marks for his forthcoming album on Carl Craig’s label Planet E.

Tell us about this mix…where was it recorded and how?

The mix was recorded in my home. It was around the time when I played for 6 hours with another great DJ at “Fête de la Musique” in my hometown in Angers. These tracks were some of the highlight tracks that I played, if I remember rightly.

I used my new rotary mixer offered by my wife. Some girl eh?! 🙂

How did you wind up recording for Planet E?

I recorded a bunch of tracks with Niko Marks. I kept saying to Niko…: “ Send them to Carl!! Send them to Carl!!!!”.

We reworked some tunes and also created new ones to submit. Around the same time and in a funny coincidence, my bro Santiago Salazar surprised me with an awesome remix. He actually sent me a private video on Facebook with the track playing in the background. Man.. another great guy… We played together in Glasgow.. He walked into the Sub club and the first thing he did was walking up to me and gave me a big hug!!!! Legend!!! So.. anyway! Eventually Niko and I decided to send Santi’s mix with the other tracks to Carl.

It was great to finally meet both Carl and Niko in person in Paris but sadly the time was cut short due to the terrible attacks in Paris.

I’ve seen Carl playing a few good times in Glasgow at the Sub club and at festivals in Europe. He really is down to earth guy and a gentleman.

I’ve been making albums and records with Niko for many years. Firing tunes from Glasgow to Detroit and now France to Detroit. Our work flow is solid, we send ideas and trust each other, to work out the best way to release the music. Whether its a Niko Marks album on Planet E or a Carlos Nilmmns project on Ornaments… Both of us are purely into this for the music and always thinking about our next project together.

Why the move to France? How do you think this has affected you as an artist and DJ?

I moved to France after meeting my wife in Paris. We decided it was best to live here than in Scotland.

I can say for me at least that environment changes the way I create. I’ve been more productive since settling here. Warmer weather changes everything! Signing to labels like the giant Circus Company and Skylax have helped my music to reach more people here in France.

I’ve played quite few amazing festivals and clubs around the country and abroad with some really great people, but I still prefer Glasgow I feel not many places will ever match the Sub Club’s edgyness and vision.

You’re asked to book your favourite DJs and live acts for a night at your favourite club. Who plays, and which club?

Hmm difficult…

Venue: Sub Club in Glasgow (would have to be a late license as the club shuts at 3)

Lineup: Paul Johnson, Kenny Dope, Claude Young, Domenic Cappello
